Laksamana Do Re Mi (Admirals Do, Re, and Mi) is a 1972 Malaysian black and white comedy film directed by P. Ramlee. It is the third installment in the “Do Re Mi” series of comedy films, and features the trio of actors P. Ramlee, A. R. Tompel and Ibrahim Din reprising their roles as Do, Re and Mi respectively. The story is loosely based on one of stories in The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, and features the trio becoming admirals and using magic to save a faraway kingdom from ruin. This film is notable as being the last film P. Ramlee made before his death in 1973.

Synopsis
The poor trio of best friends Do, Re and Mi live in a simple treehouse in the forest, where they work together collecting, cutting and selling firewood at the local marketplace. One night they hear a voice calling for help in the forest. Although they are scared that it is a spirit trying to trick them, they follow the voice and discover that it is coming from a bamboo tree. The bamboo tree is wounded, and asks them to pull out the arrow that is stuck in it. They comply, and the bamboo transforms into a young woman, who explains that she is a supernatural spirit. She thanks them and gives them each a magical item. Do receives a magic carpet that can fly, Re receives a telescope that can see anything the viewer asks of it, and Mi receives a harmonica that can give them any wishes they want.

The trio decide to use their items to find their fortune. Re uses the telescope to find that the Sultan of their kingdom is looking for brave men to become his Admirals. The trio attend the competition that is being held to find the bravest and strongest men. Mi uses his harmonica to give the trio super strength, and they win the competition easily. Impressed by them, the Sultan makes them his Admirals.

As part of an assignment, the Admirals are sent to an ally neighbouring kingdom that is under attack by an evil man named Fasola. Do, Re and Mi uses Do’s flying carpet to travel there, where they learn that Fasola is apparently invulnerable, and has destroyed the entire kingdom except a few members of the royal court, who have to take refuge underneath a tree. Fasola has also kidnapped the Princess and is holding her prisoner.

Do, Re and Mi attack Pasola and learn that he cannot be killed with conventional weapons. But then they learn that he has a literal Achilles’ heel, which they use against him. They free the Princess, whom all three fall in love with. When Do, Re and Mi fight over her, the Princess declares that she will marry all three of them. Do, Re and Mi return home in triumph, only to learn that the Sultan has asked to marry the Princess himself. Do, Re and Mi submit to their ruler, and presumably continue on their adventures together.

DESCRIPTION
A man takes a second wife without his first wife’s permission and knowledge. When she finds out, he gets into big trouble and just when the dust settles, he meets another woman he’s attracted to and marries her too. Complications ensue when all three become friends and hilarious consequences follows. Written by madjanssen

PLOT OUTLINE
The central character, Jamil, marries three women without any of them realising that their husband has committed polygamy. Jamil and Latifah have been married for 12 years. When Jamil decides to marry Hasnah, he lied to Hasnah saying that Latifah has agreed to allow him to marry again due to the fact that the pair (Jamil and Latifah) does not have children. Jamil who is also working for Latifah’s father, played by Ahmad Nisfu, told his father-in-law about his marriage with Hasnah. Later, when collecting rent from his tenants, Jamil falls for one tenant’s daughter, Rohani and decides to marry the girl. With the help of his father-in-law, Jamil manages to keep his three marriages a secret from one another. However, an encounter at the hair salon causes the three wives to meet up. Rohani invited both Latifah and Hasnah to her house for tea. Later they found Rohani’s wedding picture. The three women independently befriend each other, causing Jamil to be wrapped in an ever-tightening web of lies and trickery.

IMDB REVIEW
Trivia fans will notice that this movie is different from previous P Ramlee movies whereby apart from Ahmad Nisfu, it does not have his usual supporting actors. Instead P Ramlee carries the movie by himself and successfully does so, proving the (then) critics wrong that it was his supporting actors that were responsible for his comedies being very successful, and not himself.

In a quick summary, the film revolves around Jamil bin Abu (P Ramlee) juggling his everyday life to accommodate his new conquest of having a second wife (and eventually a third!!!), without each wife knowing the real truth of the polygamy situation. Unsurprisingly, the climax involves all 3 wives going after Jamil after having discovered that they were not the only women in his life. I won’t spoil the readers as to who eventually gets Jamil, although presumably, if you’re reading this, you would have already known anyway.
As correctly noted by several IMDb members, the storyline is theoretically impossible. IMO however this is what makes this film a success. Whereas other previous P Ramlee comedies relies heavily on slapstick or comedic elements from the actors themselves, Madu Tiga’s success is based on having a very strong (although unlikely) storyline. The actors/ actresses play their roles seriously and do not resort to slapstick, making the formula very successful. The storyline is based on an unlikely situation, and this is even made better (and thus even more unlikely) with the twist of having a father-in-law taking your side and not the daughter’s!! Special mention should go to Ahmad Nisfu (as always) who plays Jamil’s father-in-law, Haji Latiff. Married men can only dream of the scenario of having Haji Latiff as their father-in-law. Note the Company’s Name- {{Haji Latiff & Menantu}} (menantu translated is son-in-law)- this fact tells all of where his allegiance lies. Jah Haji Mahadi also does an excellent performance as Latifah, the long-suffering first wife of 12 years, as does M Rafee as P Ramlee’s dependable assistant. The scene where Rafee does not waste any time with small-talk when proposing Jamil’s third wife-to-be is just pure classic!

I also agree with the the IMDb submitter Mad_Janssen that Zera Agus’s overacting performance was weak. It unfortunately was the slight weak point of the film, as I found it hard to understand how Jamil would be attracted to her in the first place.

P. Ramlee Ali Baba Bujang Lapok (1960)

Ali Baba Bujang Lapok is a 1960 Singapore comedy film directed by, written by and starring Malaysian silver-screen legend P. Ramlee and produced in Singapore by Malay Film Productions Ltd. Based loosely on the story of Ali Baba from 1001 Arabian Nights, the film is occasionally self-referential and contains elements of anarchic comedy, burlesque comedy and farce. The title includes the suffix Bujang Lapok because it is the third installment in the Bujang Lapok series of comedy films that star the trio of P. Ramlee, S. Shamsuddin and Aziz Sattar. This film marked the feature film debut of Sarimah, who would go on to a long movie career, and is also notable as one of the few P. Ramlee films where he plays the villain.

Plot
Ali Baba (Aziz Sattar) is poor man who cannot seem to succeed in life. He constantly sends his wife to his brother Kassim Baba’s house to borrow flour so they can eat, but the stingy Kassim Baba (S. Shamsuddin) is frustrated at his brother and constantly reminds his wife of Ali Baba’s uselessness. One day, when Ali Baba is out gathering firewood he sees a group of 40 thieves marching through the woods carrying loot and riches. He hides in a tree and watches their leader (P. Ramlee) stand in front of a mountain of rock and sing a verse of seemingly nonsensical words (in actuality a Javanese language poem) which cause a passageway in the mountain to open. Ali Baba waits until the thieves have all left the cave before coming out of the tree and using the magic words to open the cave. Inside he discovers a variety of riches and wealth, but he only takes a box of gold coins.

With the gold coins Ali Baba is able to pay back his brother everything he owes and live in relative comfort. Kassim Baba is overcome with curiosity and pesters Ali Baba to tell him how he suddenly came into wealth. Ali Baba eventually relents and tells him about the cave and the magical verse to open the cave, but before he can tell him the verse to close the cave or about the thieves who use it, Kassim Baba rushes off to find the cave.

Kassim Baba, in his greed, tries to steal everything in the thieves’ cave. He is caught when the thieves return while he is still there. After trying repeatedly to stall, the eventually kill him. When Kassim Baba does not return, Ali Baba sneaks out to the cave, where he finds his brothers’ remains. He collects them and has Kassim Baba sewn together and buried.

The thief leader soon notices Ali Baba and decides to target him for their next robbery. After his thieves fail twice, the leader decides to pose as a merchant visiting Ali Baba’s house, while his thieves hide in oil jars that are kept in the courtyard. Ali Baba’s servant, Marjina, comes up with a plan to stop the thieves, in which actual boiling oil is poured into all the individual jars. After all are defeated, she attacks and kills the leader himself. Ali Baba, grateful for her loyalty, gives her her independence.

Anachronisms
Although Ali Baba Bujang Lapok is filmed as a period piece set in an unidentified country with a Middle-Eastern look, it is filled with deliberate anachronisms which are used for humour. Among them are the appearances of bicycles, motorcycles, trucks, a Vespa scooter, telephones and guns. When on leave, the 40 thieves also dress as various anachronistic characters, among them a cowboy, wig-wearing judge and a World War 2-era Japanese soldier.

In addition, the 40 thieves seem to function as a proper business, offering members health benefits, performance-based bonuses and overtime pay. Like the above anachronistic items, these are played for humorous effect (e.g. the leader of the thieves turns down a job because Sunday is a public holiday, and when the irate requester threatens to find other thieves the leader warns that if he does so the Thieves Union will take action).
